AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION (ALA) awards

2020 JOHN cotton dana / 2020 Excellence in library programming

Under my direction, the Alexandria Library received two American Library Association (ALA) awards. In September 2020, we received the most prestigious library award for public relations called the John Cotton Dana Award for the 1939 Alexandria Library Sit-In. In March 2020, we also received the Excellence in Library Programming Award for the 1939 Alexandria Library Sit-In. With my help, the Alexandria Library ran an effective campaign featuring a variety of strategies to increase its visibility in the community.

My role in the award-winning campaigns was promoting the year-long events for the 1939 Alexandria Library Sit-In by:

  • Creating visually-appealing promotional materials to publicize the Sit-In on the Library’s website, social media, and flyers

  • Photographing the various events

  • Working with local media to gain national press coverage
